YARA covers all the operating system bases by running on Windows, Linux, and macOS and is easy to install. One such open-source tool for advanced signature-based malware detection is called YARA. More advanced detection methods do not calculate a single signature from the entire file (something that is too easily changed), instead they use multiple signatures each of which are strings (hex or ascii) or regular expressions, used to identify important functional sections within the malware. A downside of filehash based malware detection is that attackers can easily disguise their malware by adding blank lines or comments to their code so new variants have a totally new filehash, rendering detection with old filehash useless! Colloquially you can think of a malware's filehash signature like a fingerprint - it's a unique identifier derived from the entire contents of a file, that reveals the malware's true malicious nature. To detect malware, defenders need a strategy and tools that can recognize it, even if it has been disguised! In the past, defenders have identified malware by it’s unique filehash signature (typically an MD5, SHA1, or SHA256 checksum). Depending on the rule, if some or all of the conditions are met it can then be used to successfully identify a piece of malware. Like a piece of programming language, YARA rules work by defining a number of variables that contain patterns found in a sample of malware. Primarily used in malware research and detection, YARA is a tool that provides a rule-based approach to create descriptions of malware families based on textual or binary patterns. For a long time now, malware-detection technologies have become more sophisticated as malware works harder than ever to gain access to a target machine and then conceal its presence as it runs.Īn abbreviation of YARA: Another Recursive Acronym, or Yet Another Ridiculous Acronym, YARA was originally developed by Victor Alvarez of VirusTotal and was released on GitHub in 2013. The once seemingly simple battle between nuisance script kiddie worms and simple anti-virus software evolved over time into a much more complex and layered approach towards stopping powerful weapons against organizations to extort, incur damages, and steal intellectual property. When it comes to detecting malware, the arms race between attackers and defenders is certainly nothing new. ![]() As attackers continually evolve their tactics, the arsenal of tools at hand for defenders needs to respond to attacker complexity while still enabling day-to-day business to happen. ![]() ![]() ![]() Between 20, induced seismic activity in the Fox Creek area (northwestern Alberta) posed the highest seismic hazard in Alberta. ![]() Other occurrences of induced seismicity happened before 2011 however, seismic activity dropped off after the peak in the early 1980s (Rocky Mountain House, west-central Alberta) and the late 1990s and early 2000s (Cordel oil field, west-central Alberta). The first known recorded case of induced seismicity related to hydraulic fracturing (i.e., injecting fluids to fracture rock) in Alberta occurred in 2011, the Cardston swarm in southwestern Alberta. ![]() To generate these maps, we used our earthquake catalogue, which includes induced and natural seismic activity and excludes mining blasts. These maps characterize the changing earthquake patterns in Alberta. To show the evolution of the seismic hazard in Alberta, we generated seismic hazard maps for each year from 2011 to 2020. Most masonry and frame structures are destroyed. Properly designed structures can collapse. Extreme - Objects are thrown upward into the air.Considerable damage in properly built structures. Slight damage in properly designed structures. Negligible damage in buildings of good design and construction. Shaking is like a heavy truck passing near a building. Weak - Felt only by a few people, especially indoors. The level of perceived shaking uses the following general terms identifying how people or structures in the area could feel the ground movement (based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale): We then associate these values with levels of perceived shaking in the area and display these areas on seismic hazard maps. The PGA values are given as a percentage of g, where g is the standard acceleration due to the Earth’s gravity (9.81 metres per second squared). We express the ground motion values as peak ground accelerations (PGA), which is the maximum acceleration the ground reaches during an earthquake. Our seismic hazard maps show the 1% chance that an area could have experienced a certain level of perceived shaking from ground motion due to earthquakes in a specific year. Evaluating the seismic hazard at a regional scale is particularly important considering the amount of induced seismicity cases related to the energy sector in Alberta. Short-term retrospective seismic hazard maps provide a mechanism to quantify and report changes in the seismic hazard at a regional scale. We generate short-term (i.e., 1 year) seismic hazard maps that include the hazard from induced seismicity sources in Alberta. However, if we incorporate induced seismicity, these long-term time frames are no longer helpful as induced seismicity is unlikely to remain constant, and relevant industrial activity inducing the seismicity likely lasts less than the long-term time frames. Commonly, seismologists design seismic hazard maps for long-term time frames (e.g., 50 years) since they assume the rate of naturally occurring earthquakes remains constant for long periods. There are long-term and short-term seismic hazard maps. This analysis evaluates the magnitude and location of potential earthquakes, their frequency, and the properties of the rocks and sediments that earthquake waves travel through. We generate our seismic hazard maps retroactively on an annual basis using the Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis. Seismic hazard maps illustrate the likelihood of an area to reach or exceed a certain level of ground motion caused by earthquakes over a set time period. ![]() ![]() While these steps configure your iPhone to auto-reply while driving, you may want to set more specific parameters, such as setting your iPhone to only send auto-reply texts to people in your contacts, not people you don’t know, so change the AUTO-REPLY TO setting to whatever you prefer. Hoppa bus may offer a cheap option but personally I will NEVER use Hoppa bus again as it is not worth the stress for such an unreliable service! They still have £12 of my money for a service they did not provide me with. They also appear to be unpredictable when they are running as the bus I just missed was already running late! Since when was that late? Especially in London?! It never occurred to me they would only run once an hour or that they would stop so early at night. When I later looked on the Hopper Bus website (which there is no link to on Holiday Extras) I found out that the reason I was waiting so long at the hotel for a bus is that they only actually run once an hour, and that incredibly, between 12.40 and.2.40 there are no buses at all! It seem absurd to me that that a bus service to one of the world’s busiest airports leaves a two hour gap at such a peak time for passengers! It also amazes me that Hoppa Bus claim on their website they have over 900 services a day and run from early till late and yet you can wait two hours for a bus and they top at 10.30pm. So, despite having already paid the £6 as part of my package deal I, and the others, found ourselves forking out to get a taxi, which for me was another £22! We waited for a few minutes and one person looked at the timetable only to announce to us all that the last Hoppa bus from Terminal 5 left at 10.30pm! We were not happy! Many, including myself saying that 10.30 pm is NOT late enough. I, and several others at the same time made our way to the correct bus stop. We arrived on time but it still took approximately an hour to get out of the airport. One week later, I flew back from Italy on an evening flight landing at Heathrow at 10.20pm. I eventually arrived at Heathrow with only 2 ¼ hours to spare and due to the appalling wait at passport control and security due to staff shortages only made my flight check in by 10 minutes! Delightfully showcasing the group rolling around in the hills of Southern California with all manners of cute, fuzzy animals, from lions to bears to puppies, the tone of Jonze's version perfectly matches the pleasantness of the single, and notably stands as one of the group's few non performance-centric videos. That version was supposedly disliked by MTV executives, so the band recruited Spike Jonze, the man behind their videos for "Undone (The Sweater Song)" and "Buddy Holly," to shoot an alternate cut.
